Cryosurgery

Veterinary Cryosurgery In Powhatan, VA

Finding a new lump or bump on your pet can be worrying. Many small skin growths are harmless, but they can still bother your pet when they bleed, itch or get caught on a collar or brush. At River Run Animal Hospital, we offer cryosurgery as a quick, gentle way to remove many of these growths without a traditional surgical procedure.

Cryosurgery uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy unwanted tissue. Because it is fast and minimally invasive, it is often a great option for senior pets and pets who may not be good candidates for general anesthesia. Our team will examine the growth, talk you through your options and help you decide whether cryosurgery is the right choice for your pet.

What Can Cryosurgery Treat?

During cryosurgery, your veterinarian applies a freezing agent directly to the growth with a precise, pen-like tool. The cold destroys the abnormal cells while leaving the healthy skin around it largely untouched. Over the following weeks, the treated tissue dries up and falls away on its own.

Cryosurgery works best on small, superficial growths. Some of the conditions we commonly treat include:

  • Warts and papillomas
  • Skin tags
  • Sebaceous (oil gland) adenomas and cysts
  • Small eyelid masses
  • Abnormal eyelashes (distichiasis)
  • Other small benign skin lesions

Not every lump is a good fit for cryosurgery. Larger masses, or growths that may be cancerous, are often better treated with traditional surgical removal. When needed, we may recommend a fine needle aspirate or biopsy first so we know exactly what we are treating.

The Benefits Of Cryosurgery For Your Pet

First, your veterinarian will examine the growth and review your pet’s overall health. If cryosurgery is a good fit, we will explain the process and answer your questions before we begin.

The treatment itself usually involves one or more quick freeze-and-thaw cycles. Your pet may feel a brief stinging or cold sensation, and our team will keep them calm and comfortable throughout. Some growths respond fully to one treatment, while others may need a follow-up session a few weeks later.

Cryosurgery offers several advantages over traditional surgery for the right kinds of growths:

Often No General Anesthesia

Many procedures can be done with a local numbing agent or light sedation.

Most lesions take only a few minutes to treat.

There is no incision to close, so there are no sutures to remove later.

The cold numbs the area as it works.

Most pets go home the same day and resume their usual routine right away.

Caring for Your Pet After Cryosurgery

Recovery from cryosurgery is usually simple. Before your pet goes home, one of our veterinary professionals will give you aftercare instructions and let you know what to expect as the area heals.

In the days after treatment, the area may look a little swollen, red or darker in color. Over the next one to three weeks, the treated growth will typically form a scab and fall off on its own, leaving healthy skin behind. A few simple steps help this process go smoothly:

  • Keep your pet from licking, scratching or chewing the area. A cone or protective covering may help.
  • Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid bathing your pet until we say it is okay.
  • Do not pick at or try to remove the scab.
  • Watch for signs of infection, such as discharge, a bad odor or swelling that gets worse.

If you notice anything that concerns you, or if the growth does not seem to be healing as expected, give us a call at (804) 794-4105.

Is Cryosurgery Painful For My Pet?

Most pets tolerate cryosurgery very well. They may feel a brief cold or stinging sensation, and we use local numbing or light sedation when needed to keep them comfortable.

No. Cryosurgery is an outpatient procedure, and most pets go home the same day.

Yes. Because it often does not require general anesthesia, cryosurgery can be an excellent option for senior pets or pets with health conditions that make anesthesia riskier.

Most treated growths do not return. Some may need a second treatment, and new growths can still appear in other spots over time, so let us know if you find any new lumps.

The best way to find out is to schedule an exam. Our veterinarians will evaluate the growth and recommend the safest, most effective treatment for your pet.
